Godman Ashok Kharat remanded in fresh rape and exploitation case

A Nashik court on Wednesday remanded self‑styled godman Ashok Kharat in 14‑day judicial custody until April 21 in a second rape case , as investigations expanded to include money‑laundering , extortion, and digital privacy violations. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) produced Kharat via video link before the Chief Judicial Magistrate due to security reasons ; he will be lodged in Nashik Road Central Jail .

The case follows a complaint by a 35‑year‑old woman who alleged that Kharat had sexually exploited her since 2020 under the guise of religious rituals , threatening her and her children. Investigators said he used superstition, including talismans and ritualistic fear tactics, to manipulate victims. The woman first approached him in 2013 for help to fix her marriage , and he continued contact even after her separation, allegedly forcing her to abort a pregnancy.

Kharat faces at least 12 criminal cases in Nashik and Ahilyanagar, eight for sexual assault. The Enforcement Directorate has registered a money‑laundering case after police uncovered financial irregularities involving land, bank accounts, and alleged extortion. Authorities are probing his assets under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Cyber police and the SIT have acted against online circulation of objectionable content, removing 4,650 links and 450 social media accounts and arresting six people. Investigators believe there may be numerous other victims.

The case has sparked a political firestorm , with photos and alleged call records linking Kharat to political figures under scrutiny. Officials pledged to investigate the leaks and ensure accountability. Kharat heads a temple trust in Sinnar and is expected to be produced in court again on April 9 for a third sexual exploitation case. Authorities have assured protection for survivors while continuing the probe into his crimes, finances, and alleged accomplices.
