Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday cautioned that India could face a serious energy crunch if the West Asia conflict is not resolved soon, warning that the situation may worsen economic pressures already affecting the country.

Addressing reporters in Srinagar, he said, “A crisis is coming upon us, fuel crisis, gas crisis. We are heading towards destruction.” He also criticised proposals to shift schools to online learning, stating, “However, everyone does not have the online facility. We will have to think and do something about it because education is very important.”

On the economy, he remarked, “The economy is definitely finished. If this Iran-US conflict does not end soon, God knows what is in store for us.” He linked global instability to rising risks for India’s financial and energy security.

His comments come amid heightened government monitoring of global energy markets. The Centre has reviewed oil, gas, and fertiliser supply chains and asserted that the situation remains stable, with adequate reserves and active contingency planning. Officials have also stated that India currently holds sufficient petroleum stocks to manage short-term disruptions, while strategic buffers are being strengthened.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged fuel conservation and reduced import dependence amid volatile global prices.

On domestic politics, Abdullah criticised opposition demands for liquor prohibition, saying, “I want to ask them why they were quiet when the liquor shops were being opened.” He added that any such decision would depend on compensation for revenue losses in Jammu and Kashmir.
