Goal, Gun Gesture And Red Card: Israel’s Sayed Abu Farchi’s Bizarre Night Against Austria

Israel forward Sayed Abu Farchi turned from scorer to sent-off player within minutes after an unusual goal celebration in the Nations League match against Austria.

Abu Farchi equalised early in the second half, making it 1-1 after Austria had taken the lead through Romano Schmid’s penalty. But his celebration quickly became the centre of attention.

The Colorado Rapids forward ran towards the corner, pulled out the corner flag and dropped to his right knee. He then rested the pole on the back of his left hand and made a firing gesture.

It was not immediately clear whether the gesture was intended to represent a pool cue shot or a weapon. The referee, however, showed Abu Farchi a second yellow card, resulting in a red card.

The dismissal came just four minutes after his first yellow, leaving Israel with 10 players and turning what had been a promising comeback into a difficult finish.

Austria took advantage of the numerical advantage in the closing stages. Phillipp Mwene restored the hosts’ lead before Sasa Kalajdzic added another goal in the final minutes to seal a 3-1 victory.

For Abu Farchi, what began as a memorable moment after scoring his side’s equaliser ended in disappointment, with his celebration resulting in an early exit and leaving Israel to play the remainder of the match a player short.
