Goa Governor P Ashok Gajapathi Raju , Chief Minister Pramod Sawant , family members, and senior leaders on Tuesday paid tribute to former Defence Minister and three‑time chief minister Manohar Parrikar on his death anniversary, recalling his contributions to the state and the nation .

Several dignitaries gathered at Parrikar’s memorial at Miramar Beach , where he was laid to rest after his death in 2019 at the age of 63 following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer . The late leader’s passing had been widely mourned across party lines, with condolences pouring in from national and regional leaders before his cremation with full state honours.

Governor Gajapathi Raju highlighted Parrikar’s role in championing policy changes, particularly his support for the phased inclusion of women in defence training after the National Defence Academy opened its doors to female cadets. Chief Minister Sawant said Parrikar’s legacy of infrastructure development and governance continues to shape Goa’s future, noting key projects initiated during Parrikar’s tenure, including enhancements in connectivity and public facilities.

During the ceremony, Sawant unveiled a portrait of Parrikar at the state assembly complex in Panaji. Parrikar’s son, Utpal Parrikar, and other family members also participated in the tribute. Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza and other senior legislators were present on the occasion.

Parrikar served as Goa’s chief minister three times - from 2000 to 2005, 2012 to 2014, and 2017 to 2019 and was India’s Defence Minister from 2014 to 2017 in the Narendra Modi‑led government . Leaders and supporters noted his simplicity, accessibility, and impactful administrative style that endeared him to many in Goa and beyond.
