Goa celebrates Easter with devotion, festivity and strong community spirit
Goa witnessed vibrant celebrations on Sunday as thousands of devotees gathered at churches and chapels across the coastal state to mark Easter , commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The festival, one of the most significant occasions in Christianity, was observed with midnight vigils, solemn prayers, and traditional feasts .
From the historic churches of Old Goa to smaller parish chapels in Salcete and Bardez, large congregations attended both midnight and morning Masses. A key ritual included the blessing of the Paschal candle , symbolising the victory of light over darkness and marking the conclusion of the 40-day Lenten period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
Easter holds profound religious significance as it celebrates the resurrection of Christ, symbolising hope, redemption, and the triumph of life over suffering and death . For the faithful, it is a reaffirmation of faith and a call to embody values such as compassion, forgiveness, and selfless love in everyday life.
Beyond its religious essence, Easter in Goa also carries strong social and cultural importance . The festival traditionally signals the beginning of the season of church feasts and community gatherings , fostering unity and shared celebration among residents. Families come together for festive meals, while local communities organise events that blend faith with long-standing traditions.
The large turnout led to heavy traffic congestion in areas surrounding major churches, as devotees and visitors thronged to participate in the celebrations.
In their Easter homilies, priests emphasised themes of renewal and resilience , urging people to carry forward the spirit of sacrifice and resurrection into their daily lives.
Extending greetings on the occasion, Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju highlighted that Easter symbolises hope, renewal, and the enduring power of faith , stressing the importance of compassion and harmony in society.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described Easter as a celebration of new beginnings, brotherhood, and humanity , calling upon people to translate its message into acts of kindness and service.
As celebrations concluded, the spirit of Easter rooted in faith, unity, and cultural vibrancy continued to resonate across Goa.
