The proposed introduction of beach shacks along Andhra Pradesh's coastline sparked a major political and public debate on Monday as thousands of women gathered at RK Beach in Visakhapatnam to protest the State government's policy permitting regulated alcohol sales at select beachfront establishments.

The large-scale demonstration, organized by the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Women's Wing , drew participants not only from Visakhapatnam but also from several districts across North Andhra Pradesh . Carrying placards, black balloons, and black ribbons, the protesters marched along Beach Road, voicing their opposition to GO No. 362 , which lays the framework for the establishment of beach shacks in coastal tourism zones.

Senior party leaders, including Varudu Kalyani , Botsa Jhansi Lakshmi , Golla Baburao , and KK Raju , joined the rally and expressed solidarity with the demonstrators. Former legislators and constituency coordinators were also present, lending support to the agitation.

Addressing the gathering, YSRCP leaders accused the coalition government of attempting to reshape Andhra Pradesh's coastal culture by promoting what they described as a " Goa-style tourism model ." They argued that allowing alcohol sales at beach shacks from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. could alter the character of public beaches that are frequented by families, women, students, and tourists.

The protesters maintained that Visakhapatnam's coastline is one of the city's most cherished public spaces and should remain accessible and comfortable for all sections of society. They expressed concerns that commercializing beach areas through liquor-serving establishments could affect the atmosphere of popular recreational destinations and raise questions about public safety.

Participants stressed that while tourism development is important for economic growth, policies aimed at boosting visitor numbers should also take into account the interests of local communities. They urged the government to engage with residents and stakeholders before implementing measures that could significantly change the use of coastal public spaces.

Calling the issue one of public interest rather than politics, the protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of GO No. 362 and urged the government to reconsider the policy in line with public opinion. The rally concluded with a renewed call for preserving the family-friendly character of Visakhapatnam's beaches while pursuing tourism-led development.
