Gill–Sudharsan Among IPL’s Most Consistent Opening Pairs: Raina

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina has hailed Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan as one of the most consistent opening pairs in IPL history , while also sparking debate over their strike rates in the modern T20 era.

Gill and Sudharsan have built a remarkably stable opening partnership across IPL 2025 and IPL 2026, consistently providing strong starts with a mix of caution and acceleration. Raina said their ability to produce 21 fifty-plus partnerships in just 46 innings reflects their exceptional understanding and coordination at the top of the order.

Statistically, both batters have been among the most productive in recent seasons. Sudharsan scored around 759 runs in IPL 2025 , while Gill has remained in the 600+ runs bracket across seasons , with both continuing to cross the 500–600 run mark in IPL 2026 . Their combined output has regularly placed them among the most reliable top-order pairs in the tournament.

Their strike rates, however, have also drawn discussion. Gill has operated at around 160+ strike rate , while Sudharsan has been close to 155–158 in the current season. While these numbers are strong by traditional standards, analysts note that modern T20 openers are increasingly expected to combine such consistency with even higher explosiveness.

Raina, however, defended their approach, highlighting their shot selection, game awareness, and ability to minimise dot balls . He noted that the duo prefers building a platform in the powerplay before accelerating, rather than taking early high-risk shots.

Former pacer Umesh Yadav also praised their temperament, saying they often appear to be scoring slowly before suddenly accelerating to strong powerplay totals without reckless intent.

Despite the debate over strike rate benchmarks, Gill and Sudharsan’s record shows a rare combination of consistency, adaptability, and sustained run production , making them one of the defining opening pairs of the current IPL era.
