Gig workers under pressure amid E-Commerce competition, says Minister Vivek

Telangana Labour Minister Dr. Vivek Venkataswamy has raised concerns over the increasing pressure on gig and platform workers caused by aggressive e-commerce delivery models. Policies such as “10-minute deliveries” are intensifying work stress, he said, while issues like delayed wages, heavier workloads, and lack of social security continue to affect gig workers.

Minister Vivek highlighted that the Telangana government remains committed to the welfare of gig and platform workers. He noted that the state has approved the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Welfare Bill, 2025, aimed at protecting workers’ rights and supporting their overall development.

In a video message released on social media platform X, he explained that while gig workers initially earned good income and ensured customer satisfaction, over time, their earnings have declined, even as work pressure has increased. The 10-minute delivery targets, in particular, have added further strain. He also pointed out that gig workers often lack stable income, job security, proper healthcare facilities, and support in case of accidents during deliveries.

The minister said Telangana has introduced a dedicated Gig Workers Act to safeguard worker rights. Under this law, a special board has been set up where workers can raise complaints if they are unfairly terminated. The government also ensures the health and safety of these workers.

However, Minister Vivek emphasized that the central government must step in to regulate e-commerce companies and protect gig workers’ interests.

Meanwhile, platform delivery workers affiliated with the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) went on strike across the country on Wednesday. They protested against poor working conditions, low pay, and lack of social security, warning that delivery services could face major disruptions during peak hours.
