A 15.5-foot python was rescued from a field in the Nilgiris district after being found immobile in a garden area near Solur and later released safely into a nearby forest, officials said.

According to the forest department, residents of Solur near Udhagamandalam first spotted the large snake lying motionless in a private garden and immediately alerted authorities. The animal had attracted attention due to its unusual stillness in the open field.

A team from the forest department reached the spot and carefully assessed the situation before initiating a rescue operation. Officials confirmed that the python was not injured but appeared unable to move after consuming a large meal , a natural post-feeding condition in large constrictor snakes that temporarily reduces mobility.

The rescue team followed standard wildlife handling protocols , ensuring minimal stress to the reptile while securing the area and preventing public interference during the operation.

After a careful assessment, the python was safely transported and released into a nearby dense forest away from human habitation. Officials confirmed that the relocation was carried out in accordance with wildlife conservation guidelines to ensure both human safety and the animal’s survival.

Forest department sources also noted that such incidents of large reptiles entering agricultural or residential fringe areas in the Nilgiris are not uncommon due to habitat overlap between forest zones and farmland , especially in regions bordering dense vegetation.

The officials further reiterated that the species is protected under wildlife conservation laws and stressed the importance of informing authorities rather than attempting any direct handling.

The operation concluded without any harm to residents or the animal, with the python now expected to continue its natural movement within its forest habitat.
