A 55-year-old man accused of raping and murdering his four-year-old niece was killed in a police encounter in Ghaziabad , and his family has refused to claim the body, saying they considered him dead the day he committed the crime. Several local residents also expressed support for the police action.

The accused, Jasim , had been wanted in connection with the brutal crime in which the child’s body was found concealed in a car in the Shalimar Garden area . Police said he was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest.

According to officials, Jasim was tracked through CCTV footage at a Delhi railway station , where he was allegedly attempting to flee after the incident. Acting on a tip-off that he would meet someone near the Banthla canal in Loni , police teams set up a trap in the Teela Mod police station area late Sunday night.

When the police confronted him, Jasim allegedly opened fire while trying to evade arrest , prompting the officers to retaliate. He sustained fatal injuries during the exchange of fire, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Shalimar Garden) Atul Kumar Singh said.

During the encounter, two head constables, Amit and Iqbal, were injured and later admitted to a hospital. Police officials said both are out of danger and receiving treatment.

Authorities also said weapons and cartridges used in the crime were recovered from the accused . His body has been sent for post-mortem examination , and further legal procedures are underway.

Meanwhile, Jasim’s relatives refused to take custody of his body. His cousin Mehboob and step-brother Naseem said the family had come from Muzaffarnagar but would not claim the body because they believed he had brought shame upon them.

In Pasonda village , a Muslim-dominated locality in the Trans-Hindon area , residents welcomed the police action. Firshad Chowdhry , husband of the area’s municipal councillor, along with supporters, met the ACP and expressed appreciation, stating that “such criminals are a blot on society.”
