Germany produced a masterclass in disciplined defending to edge Spain 1-0 in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup final on Sunday, securing a record-equalling fourth title and extending their dominance on the biggest stage.

Michel Struthoff scored the decisive goal in the 44th minute, converting a well-worked move from open play as Germany withstood relentless Spanish pressure to retain the crown they won in 2023.

The victory lifted Germany level with Pakistan as the only teams to have won the Men’s Hockey World Cup four times. Germany had previously lifted the trophy in 2002, 2006 and 2023, while Pakistan’s four triumphs came in 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994.

For Spain, the defeat prolonged their wait for a maiden World Cup title. Making their first final appearance since 1998 and only their third overall, Spain came close but could not find a way through a resolute German defence.

The final at the newly built Belfius Hockey Arena, watched by around 8,000 spectators, began cautiously, with both sides creating opportunities but struggling to produce the finishing touch.

Germany had the first penalty corner in the second minute, but Benedikt Schwarzhaupt’s effort was kept out by the Spanish goalkeeper. Spain responded with attacking spells but also failed to convert its chances.

After a goalless first half, Spain took control following the interval and repeatedly threatened the German goal. They earned a penalty corner in the 39th minute, but captain Marc Miralles sent his drag flick wide.

Germany then struck against the run of play. A swift move involving players from both flanks saw Struthoff receive the ball from the right before deflecting it past the goalkeeper, who was out of position.

Spain pushed desperately for an equaliser and even replaced goalkeeper Luiz Calzado with an outfield player in the closing minutes. However, Germany’s defence held firm to secure another World Cup crown.

Earlier, Argentina defeated the Netherlands 2-1 to claim the bronze medal. Mathias Rey scored the winner in the 59th minute after Tomás Domene had put Argentina ahead and Floris Middendorp equalised for the Dutch.
