A delegation from Jindal Steel International is expected to visit Germany shortly to evaluate the financial and operational aspects of thyssenkrupp Steel’s facilities, signaling the Naveen Jindal-led group’s growing interest in expanding its European footprint.

About Jindal Steel International: Part of the Jindal Group, JSI is a leading steel manufacturer with a presence in domestic and international markets. The conglomerate also has investments in energy, mining, and infrastructure. JSI focuses on high-quality steel production while increasingly emphasizing sustainable and low-emission steel technologies to align with global green initiatives.

In September, Jindal Steel International had submitted a non-binding offer to thyssenkrupp AG and initiated preliminary discussions regarding a potential acquisition of the company’s steel division. Industry sources indicate that the upcoming visit will involve an in-depth assessment of thyssenkrupp Steel’s operations, including a technical review of plant machinery and a broader evaluation of business processes. Discussions with site workers may also be held, given that thyssenkrupp Steel reportedly carries a pension liability of around €2.7 billion.

The steel facility under consideration, located in Duisburg, approximately 550 km from Berlin, has an annual production capacity of 11 million tonnes and has been operational for nearly five decades.

Why Germany? Industry experts say several factors make Germany an attractive target for JSI:

• Advanced Steel Technology – Germany leads globally in efficient and low-emission steelmaking. Acquiring thyssenkrupp allows JSI to integrate cutting-edge manufacturing processes.

• Access to European Markets – Germany’s central position in Europe provides direct access to industrial customers and export markets, enhancing JSI’s global footprint.

• Green Steel Transition – With Europe prioritizing sustainable steel, the acquisition aligns with JSI’s goal of becoming a low-emission, integrated steelmaker.

• Industrial Legacy – Thyssenkrupp Steel’s 200-year history and established reputation bolster JSI’s credibility in Europe.

• Skilled Workforce and Infrastructure – Duisburg offers experienced engineers, technicians, and logistics networks, facilitating rapid scaling of operations.

• Strategic Diversification – Expanding into Germany helps JSI reduce dependency on Indian and Asian markets while gaining exposure to a stable economy.

Jindal Group sees the acquisition as a step toward strengthening its global presence. Narendra Misra, Director of European Operations at Jindal Steel International, previously emphasized the group’s commitment to sustainable growth:

"We believe in the future of green steel production in Germany and Europe. Our goal is to preserve and grow thyssenkrupp's 200-year industrial legacy and help transform it into Europe’s largest integrated low-emission steelmaker."
