German Footballer Niklas Süle Calls Time on Career at 30 After Emotional Injury Battle

German defender Niklas Süle has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 30, bringing an emotional end to a career filled with major trophies, unforgettable moments, and constant injury struggles .

The former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich star confirmed that he will leave football at the end of the season when his Dortmund contract expires. The decision came after a frightening knee injury scare during a recent match against TSG Hoffenheim .

Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast, Süle admitted he feared the worst after hurting his knee and thought he had suffered another ACL tear . The emotional moment deeply affected him.

“I cried for 10 minutes,” Süle revealed, recalling the tense moments after the club doctor examined his knee.

Although the injury was not as serious as first feared, the incident forced the defender to rethink his future. Süle said he no longer wanted to spend months recovering from injuries instead of spending time with his family and children.

The German international also spoke openly about the pressure he faced regarding his fitness and weight throughout his career. In a shocking revelation, he admitted using fasting and extreme sauna sessions to lose weight before club weigh-ins.

Despite the difficult ending, Süle leaves behind an impressive football legacy. He won the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020 and lifted five Bundesliga titles during his successful spell with the club.

One of the standout moments of his later career came during Dortmund’s run to the 2024 Champions League final, when his dramatic goal-line clearance denied Kylian Mbappé and helped eliminate Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.

Süle also represented Germany national football team 49 times, featuring in two FIFA World Cups before deciding to step away from the sport earlier than expected.
