Google Maps has been upgraded with Gemini, the company’s latest AI assistant, which is gradually replacing Google Assistant in the app. The update has been rolled out to a limited number of users, providing a smarter and more interactive navigation experience.

With this integration, users can access hands-free voice commands for route directions, nearby fuel stations, alternative routes, and other local information. The AI responds through conversational voice, making interactions feel more natural, similar to speaking with a human assistant. The feature reduces the need to look at the screen while driving, thereby enhancing safety.

Gemini is designed to handle multi-step and complex queries. For instance, users can ask about budget-friendly restaurants, vegetarian options, and parking availability in a single query. Additionally, the assistant can create calendar events, manage phone calls, send messages, play music via platforms like Spotify, summarize emails, and provide details about upcoming meetings all without leaving Google Maps.

A noticeable change in the app’s interface has been implemented. The traditional microphone icon has been replaced with a Gemini blue spark, signaling that Gemini is now controlling voice interactions. The four-color Google Assistant ring appears briefly before transitioning to blue, clearly indicating the shift in AI control.

Navigation has been further improved with support for local landmarks, EV charging stations, and estimated arrival time sharing. Google has emphasized that the rollout is currently limited to select Android and iOS users, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks, as announced in early November 2025.

By integrating Gemini, Google Maps is becoming a fully conversational platform, allowing users to access a wide range of services and information safely while driving. This upgrade marks a significant step toward AI-powered navigation, combining convenience, safety, and smart assistance.
