GDN Trailer Showcases R Madhavan's Striking Transformation Into 'Edison of India' GD Naidu
The makers of GDN , an upcoming biographical period drama based on the life of renowned engineer, inventor and philanthropist Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu (GD Naidu) , have released the film's official trailer, offering audiences a glimpse of R Madhavan's remarkable transformation into the pioneering industrialist often referred to as the "Edison of India."
Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar , who has co-written the screenplay with Madhavan, the film chronicles the extraordinary life and achievements of GD Naidu, one of India's most celebrated innovators. After receiving acclaim for portraying scientist Nambi Narayanan in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect , Madhavan once again takes on the role of a real-life historical figure.
The nearly three-minute trailer traces Naidu's journey from his humble beginnings to becoming a visionary entrepreneur and industrial pioneer. Madhavan is seen portraying multiple phases of Naidu's life, including his younger years and his later life, with the actor appearing almost unrecognisable in the elderly avatar.
The trailer opens with speculation surrounding Naidu's final years, including rumours that he had lost his sanity and destroyed his own building. It then showcases his rise as an innovator who built the UMS public transport network and established some of India's earliest polytechnic institutions.
A major theme of the film is the resistance Naidu faced from authorities. The trailer highlights police raids, alleged tax-related accusations and a treason charge linked to his business dealings with the Nazis. The film's promotional material carries the tagline: "Feared by the British. Forgotten by his countrymen."
The film also stars Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Priyamani, Vinay Rai, Dushara Vijayan and Aditi Balan . Produced by Varghese Moolan Pictures in association with Tricolour Films , GDN features music by Govind Vasantha and cinematography by Aravind Kamalanathan .
The trailer was launched at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore , GD Naidu's hometown. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 17, 2026 .
