Gautam Gambhir Hails India’s Resilience, Praises Sonal Dinusha After Colombo Test Draw

India head coach Gautam Gambhir praised the character, patience and mental toughness of the Shubman Gill-led side after their 1-0 Test series victory over Sri Lanka, while also applauding Sri Lankan batter Sonal Dinusha for his outstanding performances in the drawn second Test in Colombo.

India were denied a 2-0 series sweep after Sri Lanka mounted a determined fightback to save the second Test despite being asked to follow on. Dinusha played a central role in the hosts' resistance, scoring centuries in both innings, including an unbeaten 133 off 264 balls in the second innings.

Following the conclusion of the series, Gambhir took to social media to commend his players and acknowledge Dinusha's remarkable effort.

“ Test cricket needs character, patience and mental toughness that's shown by our boys! Special shoutout to Sonal Dinusha for his exceptional performance, ” Gambhir wrote.

India had taken control of the Colombo Test after posting 503/9, powered by centuries from Devdutt Padikkal (117) and Dhruv Jurel (115 not out). Rishabh Pant (63) and captain Shubman Gill (50) also made valuable contributions. Sri Lanka were then bowled out for 290, prompting India to enforce the follow-on.

However, Sri Lanka produced a spirited response in their second innings. Dinusha anchored the fightback and shared a crucial 112-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha, who made 46 off 150 balls. With the lower order providing stubborn support, Sri Lanka eventually reached 429/9, ensuring the match ended in a draw.

Dinusha's unbeaten century was his third hundred of the series, underlining his emergence as the standout performer in Sri Lanka's batting line-up.

India had earlier won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs, with Manav Suthar's maiden 10-wicket haul and Padikkal's first-innings 167 playing decisive roles.

Although India missed out on a clean sweep, the visitors returned home with a hard-earned 1-0 series triumph, while Dinusha's remarkable resistance gave Sri Lanka a memorable finish to the two-match contest.
