An accused in the 2017 murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has won a seat in the Jalna Municipal Corporation elections, a development that has sparked widespread concern and debate over criminal antecedents in electoral politics.

Shrikant Pangarkar , who is facing trial in the Gauri Lankesh murder case, emerged victorious in the civic polls held on January 15, 2026 , contesting as an independent candidate from Ward 13 . He secured the seat by a margin of 2,661 votes , defeating his nearest rival from the Bharatiya Janata Party. The results were formally declared on Friday, January 16 .

Pangarkar is among those named by investigating agencies in connection with the assassination of Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead outside her Bengaluru residence on September 5, 2017 . The killing had triggered nationwide outrage and renewed calls for safeguarding press freedom. The case remains under trial, and Pangarkar has not been convicted.

Under existing Indian law, individuals facing criminal charges are permitted to contest elections unless convicted by a court of law. Election officials stated that the Jalna civic polls were conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions and established legal procedures.

However, the electoral success of an accused in a high-profile murder case has reignited debate on the criminalisation of politics . Opposition parties, journalists’ bodies and civil society groups expressed alarm, calling the outcome reflective of deeper challenges confronting democratic accountability.

Legal experts reiterated the need for comprehensive electoral reforms, including stricter disqualification norms and greater voter awareness regarding candidates’ criminal backgrounds, to strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.
