Gas Price Hike ‘May Day Gift’ To Workers By Modi: KTR
BRS Working President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) expressed strong anger over the Centre’s decision to sharply increase commercial gas cylinder prices , stating that it has imposed an unbearable burden on the poor and working classes. He demanded that the hike be immediately withdrawn .
Speaking at the May Day celebrations held at Telangana Bhavan on Friday, KTR launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. He remarked that instead of supporting workers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given them this price hike as a “ May Day gift .” He alleged that increasing prices of cylinders and petrol after elections had become a pattern for the Prime Minister.
KTR stated that oil companies had increased commercial gas prices by as much as Rs.993 , calling it the highest hike in the country’s history . As a result, the price of a commercial cylinder in Hyderabad has reached Rs.3,315 , he noted.
He further pointed out that the price of a 5-kg free trade LPG (market-priced) cylinder had been raised from Rs.549 to Rs.810.50 . He warned that this hike would severely impact hotels, restaurants, and small businesses, putting the livelihoods of lakhs of workers at risk. If establishments are forced to shut down due to rising costs, workers could be left jobless, he cautioned.
Referring to global conditions, KTR said that rising tensions between Iran and the United States were already affecting the world economy, and increasing gas prices at such a time would “break the back of the common man.” He criticised the falling value of the rupee and rising fuel prices, stating that they have made life increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens.
Accusing the Centre of working in favour of corporate interests , he alleged that the government was ignoring the hardships of the common people. He warned that if the increased prices are not rolled back immediately, they would launch a public agitation .
