Gas fire in Konaseema brought under control: ONGC

The gas fire at a well near Mori village in Malikipuram mandal, Konaseema district, is gradually being brought under control, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) said on Wednesday. Officials added that the intensity of the flames is unlikely to increase, allowing residents who had evacuated over the past two days to return home safely.

The incident occurred on January 5 at the Mori-5 gas well, when a sudden blowout caused gas to escape uncontrollably. A blowout happens when the system controlling pressure in a gas well fails, forcing gas or crude oil to shoot out at high speed. The incident sent flames soaring up to 20 meters, creating a major fire hazard. As a precaution, around 450 people from Mori and Irusumand villages were moved to temporary relief centers.

Specialist teams from ONGC in Delhi and Mumbai were deployed to manage the situation. Workers have been clearing steel debris and other obstructions around the well, while continuously cooling the flames using a “water blanket” system. Once the debris is removed and the wellhead is clearly visible, authorities will begin sealing the well.

The intensity of the fire and noise has significantly decreased. Joint Collector Nishanthi said the next steps will be determined after assessing the well once the debris is cleared. If local teams are unable to fully control the situation, officials are considering calling experts from the US-based international firm, Wild Well Control.

Villagers have voiced concerns about the risk to their lives and crops. Protesting against ONGC, some shouted slogans demanding the company leave the area. Officials are expected to decide soon whether the well will continue operations or be permanently closed. Meanwhile, the 450 displaced residents are preparing to return to their homes.
