Gandhi’s Message Belongs to All Humanity: Murmu Unveils Bust in North Macedonia

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Museum of the City of Skopje in North Macedonia, describing it as a lasting symbol of friendship between the two countries and their shared commitment to peace, tolerance and humanity. The ceremony, held with North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, formed a key highlight of Murmu's historic two day state visit, the first ever by an Indian Head of State to the Balkan nation.

Addressing the gathering, Murmu said Mahatma Gandhi belonged to India but his message belongs to all humanity. She said his life demonstrated that truth and non violence are powerful instruments for securing justice, dignity and freedom. At a time when the world faces conflict, intolerance and division, Gandhiji's faith in dialogue, compassion and peaceful coexistence remains profoundly relevant, she added.

Expressing confidence that the bust would deepen cultural and people to people ties, the President said she hoped visitors, particularly young people, would pause before it, reflect on Gandhi's message and be inspired to reject hatred, resolve differences peacefully and serve society with courage and empathy.

The Museum of the City of Skopje preserves the history of the Macedonian capital from its earliest settlements around 3000 BC to the modern era, making the installation of Gandhi's bust a significant cultural milestone.

Earlier in the day, Murmu visited the Memorial of Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje in 1910 before moving to India. During her visit, she also addressed North Macedonia's Assembly, describing the country as an important partner in building a stable, multipolar and prosperous global future, while advocating stronger parliamentary exchanges and deeper bilateral cooperation.
