Gandhi Sarovar project awaits defence land nod

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy continued his ongoing visit to the national capital, meeting key Union ministers to advance critical state projects. On Wednesday, CM Reddy held discussions with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, seeking the transfer of 98.20 acres of Defence Ministry land to Telangana for the proposed Gandhi Sarovar Project. The meeting was attended by Telangana MPs including Chamal Kiran Kumar Reddy and Kadiyam Kavya.

The Gandhi Sarovar Project, planned at the confluence of the Musi and Eesa rivers, aims to construct the Gandhi Circle of Unity, which will feature a knowledge hub promoting Gandhian principles, a meditation centre, a handloom promotion facility, recreational areas, landscaped gardens, a peace monument, and a museum. According to the Telangana government, this project is intended to establish Hyderabad as a cultural and spiritual centre while promoting Gandhian values for future generations.

CM Reddy emphasized the strategic importance of the land transfer for accelerating the Gandhi Sarovar Project. He highlighted that such coordination with the central government is crucial for the timely execution of state infrastructure projects, which, once completed, are expected to boost tourism, cultural activities, and economic growth in Hyderabad.

This request follows prior interactions with the central government concerning land transfers for infrastructure development in Telangana. In June 2024, Reddy had requested the transfer of 2,450 acres of Defence land in Hyderabad for road expansions, flyovers, and other civic projects. Additionally, he proposed a reciprocal exchange of 2,462 acres of state land with Defence Department holdings in Ravirala village.

The Gandhi Sarovar initiative is also aligned with Telangana’s objective to celebrate local history and freedom struggle heroes. During the meeting, CM Reddy paid tribute to Telangana freedom fighter Chakali Ailamma, offering floral respects to her portrait on her death anniversary. He acknowledged her legacy, along with figures like Sammakka and Saralamma, linking the project to the state’s historical and cultural heritage.

By securing the 98.20 acres, the Telangana government aims to implement the Gandhi Sarovar Project as a landmark cultural, spiritual, and tourist destination, reflecting Gandhian ideals and reinforcing Hyderabad’s position as a national centre for heritage and development.
