Gandhi Hospital Scripts History: First Baby Born Through Government’s Free IVF Programme
In a landmark achievement for Telangana’s public healthcare system, a woman who underwent treatment at the free In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Centre established by the state government at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad has delivered a healthy baby girl. This is the first-ever birth through a free IVF programme in a government hospital in the state , marking a historic moment and kindling new hope among childless couples.
Fertility treatment, long regarded as an expensive corporate medical service, has now been made accessible to the poor through this government initiative. The Telangana government set up the advanced IVF centre at Gandhi Hospital in 2023 , with an investment of over Rs. 5 crore . The facility includes state-of-the-art equipment and a dedicated embryology department , aimed at delivering high-quality reproductive healthcare. In private hospitals, IVF procedures typically cost lakhs of rupees, placing them beyond the reach of many families. By offering the treatment free of cost, the government sought to bridge this gap and extend specialised care to economically disadvantaged sections.
Collective Medical Effort and Modern Technology
Doctors stated that the success was the result of the coordinated efforts of the Department of Gynaecology and the IVF specialist team at Gandhi Hospital. The procedure was conducted under the supervision of experienced doctors using advanced medical technology. Expressing their happiness, the medical team said, “The government’s resolve has taken shape. This is not just the birth of a child, but proof of hope for thousands of childless couples.”
They emphasised that the achievement reflects the quality of services being delivered in government hospitals, backed by modern infrastructure and the dedication of skilled professionals. The success is expected to inspire confidence among couples seeking fertility treatment across the state.
Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha's Congratulations
Marking the occasion, State Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha personally visited the IVF Centre at Gandhi Hospital and felicitated the medical team. He presented appreciation certificates to the doctors and staff, stating that the development proves that government hospitals can deliver international-standard medical services . He assured that the services would be further expanded and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting poor couples in their journey towards parenthood.
