At the FIFA Congress in Vancouver , football’s biggest administrative stage turned into a mirror of global tensions, where diplomacy faltered, disagreements sharpened, and the idea of sport as a unifying force was put to test.

In one of the most striking moments, Jibril Rajoub , president of the Palestinian Football Association, refused to shake hands with Israeli official Basim Sheikh Suliman . Called on stage by FIFA president Gianni Infantino , the two stood visibly apart. Rajoub protested off microphone before walking away, turning a symbolic gesture into a powerful political statement.

The tension is rooted in a long running dispute. Palestinian officials have repeatedly accused Israel of violating FIFA statutes by allowing clubs from West Bank settlements to compete in its domestic leagues. While FIFA earlier declined to suspend Israel citing the region’s complex legal status, the issue is now set to be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport . In a separate matter, Israel’s football association was fined over disciplinary violations involving discrimination and racist abuse, adding further strain.

Amid this charged atmosphere, Infantino delivered another headline making assertion: Iran will participate in the upcoming World Cup and will play its matches in the United States , despite ongoing political hostilities between the two nations. Framing football as a bridge rather than a barrier, Infantino stressed “unity through football” , insisting that the global game must rise above geopolitical divides.

Yet, reality outside the speeches told a different story. Iranian football officials were reportedly denied entry into Canada , and Iran was marked absent during the Congress roll call. Protests also unfolded outside the venue, reflecting unease surrounding participation and representation.

Beyond politics, financial concerns also surfaced. FIFA defended its ticket pricing strategy while announcing an additional $100 million support package for participating nations, acknowledging rising costs ahead of the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico .

Despite repeated appeals for cooperation, the Congress made one thing clear: football may aspire to unite the world, but it cannot escape the realities shaping it. From silent refusals on stage to firm decisions off it, the beautiful game continues to carry the weight of a divided world.
