Gambhir confident India will peak before WC

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir believes the national team still has some distance to cover before it reaches its desired level of preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, he remains confident that the next three months will be enough to fine-tune all aspects before the title defence.

In a teaser of his interview with bcci.tv, Gambhir underlined the importance of maintaining high fitness standards and fostering honesty within the dressing room. “It has been a very transparent and honest dressing room, and that’s how we want it to be,” he said. “We still aren’t where we want to be in the T20 World Cup. Hopefully, everyone understands the importance of being fit. We still have three months to get where we want to be.”

The 2026 T20 World Cup will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February-March next year, with India entering the tournament as defending champions. Gambhir, known for his tough-minded leadership style, also reiterated his philosophy of testing players under pressure to assess their temperament and character.

“Throw guys in the deep sea as simple as it can get,” he remarked, citing the example of Shubman Gill’s appointment as Test captain. The young opener led from the front during his debut series against England, scoring crucial runs and helping India draw the hard-fought series 2–2, where each match went down to the wire.

As the countdown to the World Cup begins, Gambhir’s focus on fitness, honesty, and mental resilience signals a clear intent to build a battle-hardened, united team capable of defending its crown on home soil.
