US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta on October 30-31, bringing together representatives of the world’s leading economies to discuss global economic challenges, energy security, geopolitical crises and resilient supply chains ahead of the leaders’ summit in December.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to attend the meeting, according to reports. The US Department of State said Washington would use the ministerial to strengthen practical cooperation on shared economic and security challenges.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the United States is returning the G20 to its core economic mission of driving growth, strengthening economic security, and delivering results for the American people,” the department said in a statement on Monday.

The discussions will address geopolitical crises contributing to global economic shocks, including threats to freedom of navigation, energy and food security, and international supply chains. Washington has emphasised that global security and economic prosperity are closely interconnected.

The meeting comes as the United States pursues its 2026 G20 presidency, with affordable and secure energy supplies and technological innovation among its stated priorities. Previous ministerial discussions under the presidency have addressed energy, emerging technologies and trade, including supply-chain resilience and concerns over the use of food as a tool of economic coercion.

A separate Quad foreign ministers’ meeting involving India, the United States, Japan and Australia is also scheduled to take place on the sidelines in Atlanta, according to reports. It would be the grouping’s second foreign ministers’ meeting this year, following the meeting hosted by India in May. The engagement comes amid recent diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Washington.

The Atlanta ministerial will precede the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for December 14-15 at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida. US President Donald Trump will host the summit as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence.

The foreign ministers’ discussions are expected to help prepare the ground for the leaders’ meeting, where participating governments will address broader economic and strategic priorities. The State Department described Atlanta, a major centre of diplomacy, connectivity and commerce, as an appropriate venue for the discussions.
