Marking four decades of its existence, the Karnataka Lokayukta found itself at a moment of both reflection and renewal, as Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant called for a sharper, technology-driven approach to accountability and transparency in governance.

Speaking at a commemorative event, the CJI underlined that institutions like the Lokayukta must evolve with time while staying rooted in their founding purpose. His message was clear: in an era where citizens demand faster access to information and greater clarity in public life, governance systems must respond with openness that is practical and measurable .

The event also saw the launch of a digital assets and liabilities portal for elected representatives, along with an online investigation module , steps that signal a shift towards real-time transparency. According to the CJI, such tools transform transparency from a promise into a lived reality, making accountability part of everyday public life .

He emphasized that the strength of institutions is not measured only by the cases they handle, but by the trust they build among citizens , a safeguard that lies at the heart of democracy.

Drawing from India’s long-standing ethical traditions, Justice Kant observed that governance has always been seen not as ownership of power, but as a responsibility anchored in public trust . The Lokayukta, he said, continues this legacy by ensuring that authority remains open to scrutiny and responsive to the people.

The Karnataka Lokayukta, often regarded as one of the most effective anti-corruption bodies in the country, was praised for its independent investigative powers , a feature still missing in many states, but crucial to its credibility.

Adding to the discussion, Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar stressed that an empowered Lokayukta is not a threat, but a strong ally to good governance . He called for greater autonomy, better resources, and updated legal frameworks to meet emerging challenges.

As the institution steps into its fifth decade, the message from the judiciary was forward-looking, embrace innovation, deepen public engagement, and make accountability a shared commitment.
