India’s scientific achievements in space are more than just technological milestones, they are a continuation of a tradition that has been part of the country’s cultural identity for millennia, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday.

Speaking at the inauguration of Maha Shivaratri celebrations at the Isha Yoga Center , led by Sadhguru , Singh highlighted the deep connection between India’s ancient knowledge and modern scientific exploration. “The Sun and the Moon are not just celestial bodies,” he said. “They form the very basis of our calendar, festivals, and auspicious timings , determined through precise scientific calculations. This shows that science has always been part of our cultural fabric.”

Singh drew a direct link between this ancient tradition and India’s contemporary space missions. “When India launches missions like Chandrayaan (Moon), Mangalyaan (Mars), or Aditya-L1 (Sun), it is not just a technological achievement. These are modern expressions of the ancient scientific spirit that has always defined our civilization,” he said. “As we send satellites into space, we are simultaneously advancing our scientific culture.”

He also emphasized that national strength is not only about military might or technology. “Weapons and soldiers are essential, but true security comes from a fearless society with a strong national consciousness . This inner strength is rooted in our spiritual heritage,” Singh said. Highlighting the cultural inspiration of India’s armed forces, he said, “Our soldiers embody the compassion of Shiva during humanitarian efforts and the intensity of Rudra in critical operations, such as Operation Sindoor .”

The Minister also acknowledged the Bhavya Bharat Bhushan awards , instituted by the Isha Foundation to honor individuals excelling in science, technology, arts, history, and culture. Three armed forces institutions, the Western Air Command , Army’s Southern Command , and Western Naval Command , were recognized for their role in Operation Sindoor. “This recognition fills me with pride,” Singh said.

Singh further reflected on the unity of culture and science in India. “Culture is not merely rituals, it is a way of life. In India, scientific inquiry and spiritual insight have always complemented each other.” He noted the historical links between Kashi and Tamil Nadu , describing Tamil Nadu as a land deeply rooted in history through its language, art, and cuisine . “Coming here feels like a blessing. I come not just as a guest, but as a spiritual seeker ,” he said.

Through his remarks, Singh painted a picture of India where ancient wisdom and modern science converge, where the lessons of the past inform the innovations of the future, and where tradition continues to inspire breakthroughs that make India a global leader in technology and space exploration.
