From Varanasi to Dubai: Vijayawada’s Big Aviation Push Takes Shape

Vijayawada International Airport is poised for a significant expansion of its role as a regional aviation gateway, following the launch of IndiGo’s new Vijayawada–Varanasi–Kolkata services. The broader plan combines additional domestic routes, international connectivity, upgraded infrastructure and new tourism-focused air links.

The new services, operating three days a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, strengthen links between Andhra Pradesh, Varanasi and Kolkata. They can support religious travel, particularly pilgrimages to Varanasi, while also benefiting tourism, education, medical travel and commercial activity. The inaugural service recorded 89 passengers arriving in Vijayawada from Varanasi and 129 departing for Varanasi, indicating immediate demand.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu has said flights to Pune, Ahmedabad and Kochi will be added soon. These routes could broaden Vijayawada’s domestic catchment, provide easier access to business and education centres, and support pilgrimage traffic, including travellers heading towards Sabarimala through Kochi.

The ministry’s proposed hub-and-spoke model could be especially important for international expansion. Vijayawada would function as a spoke link with major international hubs, allowing passengers to complete customs and immigration procedures at Vijayawada before transferring to international flights. This could make overseas journeys more seamless while expanding access to global destinations without requiring every route to be operated directly from Vijayawada.

A new integrated terminal building is another critical element. Expediting the project would provide infrastructure capable of supporting rising passenger volumes and future domestic and international operations. Its planned incorporation of local art and culture could also give the airport a stronger regional identity.

The proposed seaplane network adds another dimension. Operations from Prakasam Barrage, Srisailam, Hussain Sagar and Nagarjuna Sagar could connect aviation with tourism, pilgrimage and regional mobility, creating new travel circuits.

Meanwhile, local representatives have sought a direct Vijayawada–Dubai service, which could significantly improve international access and offer onward connections to markets across Africa, Europe and the Americas through Dubai.

Together, these initiatives could reposition Vijayawada as a multimodal regional gateway with international ambitions, linking conventional aviation, global hubs and tourism destinations.
