From Policy Move in Kolkata to Homecoming in Kanthi: Suvendu Adhikari’s First Day as Bengal CM
West Bengal’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari marked his first day in office with a blend of political signalling in Kolkata and a massive emotional homecoming in Kanthi , reflecting both policy intent and public support.
Soon after taking oath at the Brigade Parade Grounds , Adhikari announced that his government would propose June 20 as West Bengal Day , replacing the Poila Baisakh observance supported by the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee . He said the date holds historical significance linked to the 1947 Partition-era decisions , when Bengal’s political future within India was shaped.
Adhikari said the proposal would be placed before the cabinet and Assembly , describing June 20 as a defining moment in the state’s history. He also referred to the influence of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Swami Pranabananda in shaping Bengal’s political direction.
The move has revived a long-standing debate over state identity and history, especially after earlier tensions between the state government and Raj Bhavan regarding the observance of June 20 as West Bengal Day.
Late at night, after visiting Kalighat Kali Temple , Adhikari travelled to his hometown Kanthi in Purba Medinipur. His arrival at his residence, Shantikunj , around 2 am triggered a huge outpouring of supporters , who had gathered since evening despite the late hour.
As his convoy entered the locality, people showered flowers, raised slogans, and surrounded the vehicle , forcing it to slow down. The Chief Minister briefly stepped out, acknowledged the crowd, and urged people to return home due to the late hour.
The emotional homecoming continued into Sunday, with supporters arriving from across districts. Adhikari also met his parents, marking a deeply personal moment after a politically significant day.
His first day thus combined a strong policy signal in Kolkata with an overwhelming public reception in Kanthi , setting the tone for his tenure ahead.
