From ‘No Cases’ to two FIRs: Vijay submits fresh affidavit amid scrutiny

Amid heightened scrutiny during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly election process, Vijay , founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has submitted a revised election affidavit disclosing two pending FIRs that were not mentioned in his earlier filing. The initial affidavit, notarised on March 30, had stated that no criminal cases were pending , prompting attention after the updated disclosure.

The fresh affidavit, notarised on April 3 and submitted on April 4 through a representative, was filed before the returning officer to rectify discrepancies between earlier nominations . In the revised filing, Vijay disclosed FIR No. 74 of 2026 registered at K5 Peravallur Police Station in Chennai, which pertains to an alleged public disturbance during election campaigning on March 30. He stated that he became aware of this case only on April 2 through social media reports .

The second case, FIR No. 108 of 2025 from Koodakovil Police Station in Madurai district, relates to an incident during a TVK party conference held on August 21, 2025. According to the complaint, a supporter attempting to approach Vijay during a public event was pushed by security personnel and injured , leading to a situation described as stampede-like near the stage . Vijay noted in the affidavit that he has not received any formal summons in connection with this case.

While no case under financial crime laws has been formally listed, the developments have also drawn attention to broader compliance and disclosure obligations , including potential scrutiny under frameworks such as the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, though no confirmed PMLA case has been mentioned in the affidavit.

Despite the revisions in the criminal disclosure section, Vijay’s financial declarations remained largely consistent . His movable assets are valued at approximately ₹410.59 crore , compared to ₹404.58 crore declared earlier, including silver articles worth ₹15 lakh and 883 grams of gold jewellery valued at over ₹1.20 crore . The total market value of his immovable properties stands at around ₹220.15 crore , comprising residential and commercial assets in areas such as Neelankarai and Saligramam . He also declared a total income of ₹184.53 crore for the 2024–25 financial year , along with pending income tax demands of ₹3.44 crore , which are currently under appeal.

Vijay is contesting the elections from Perambur and Tiruchirapalli East constituencies . He filed his first nomination for Perambur on March 30 and subsequently submitted his nomination for Tiruchirapalli East on April 2. The supplementary affidavit filed on April 4 in Perambur was intended to ensure consistency across both nominations and maintain compliance with Election Commission norms requiring full disclosure of pending criminal proceedings.
