If Karnataka is indeed headed for a leadership transition this week, many within the Congress see it not merely as a power shift, but as the culmination of D K Shivakumar’s long political redemption story .

At a time when few believed the BJP could be unseated in Karnataka, Shivakumar stood as one of the Congress’s most aggressive and visible faces in opposition. He endured investigations, arrest and imprisonment during the BJP years, yet remained one of the party’s most relentless organisers on the ground.

When the Congress returned to power in 2023 with a decisive mandate , many expected Shivakumar to become Chief Minister. Instead, after intense negotiations in Delhi, the high command chose Siddaramaiah for the top post, with Shivakumar agreeing to serve as Deputy Chief Minister despite expectations within his camp of a rotational arrangement after two-and-a-half years.

Even after the reported transition timeline passed by several months, Shivakumar never publicly rebelled against the leadership. He continued to maintain cordial relations with Siddaramaiah, defended the government during crises, and repeatedly projected himself as a disciplined Congress loyalist .

Party insiders say this restraint significantly strengthened his standing with the high command. Unlike many regional satraps who openly challenge central leadership, Shivakumar consistently framed his political ambition within the party structure rather than against it.

Beyond Karnataka, he also emerged as one of the Congress’s most effective organisational strategists in southern India, playing active roles in campaigns and coordination efforts in neighbouring Telangana and Kerala. Congress leaders credit his charisma, fundraising ability, cadre mobilisation and booth-level organisational skills as critical factors behind the party’s revival in Karnataka and its strengthening in parts of the South.

Sources indicate that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi increasingly came to view Shivakumar not only as a mass leader but also as someone who had demonstrated unusual patience, discipline and unwavering loyalty despite personal disappointment.

Now, as speculation intensifies over Siddaramaiah’s possible resignation following his scheduled meeting with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot , Shivakumar is widely seen as the frontrunner to become Karnataka’s next Chief Minister.

For many in the Congress, the moment represents more than a leadership transition. It is being viewed as the party finally rewarding a leader who brought it back to power, stood by it during its most difficult years, and never wavered in loyalty even when power appeared within reach but remained out of grasp.
