In a move aimed at making religious contributions easier and more accessible for devotees across the globe, the Odisha government is considering the introduction of an ‘e-hundi’ facility for the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri . The proposal is expected to usher one of India's most prominent pilgrimage centres into a new era of digital convenience while preserving the sanctity of traditional offerings.

The idea was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan , following repeated requests from devotees residing in different parts of India and abroad. Many followers of Lord Jagannath have long sought a secure and official online platform through which they can contribute to the temple's activities and development.

According to officials, the proposed digital donation system is likely to be introduced under the name ‘Samarpan’ , a platform designed to enable devotees to make contributions seamlessly from anywhere in the world. The initiative is expected to simplify the donation process and strengthen the connection between the temple and its global devotee community.

The discussions also focused on exploring the possibility of making such donations tax exempt , a move that could encourage greater participation from devotees. Funds received through the proposed e-hundi system may be utilised for infrastructure development , conservation projects , and the preservation of the centuries-old temple's heritage .

At the same time, the government has emphasised that security will remain a top priority. Minister Harichandan stressed the need for a robust digital framework to ensure that all transactions are protected against cyber fraud and misuse. Authorities have been asked to examine safeguards that would guarantee transparency and trust in the online donation mechanism.

If implemented, the e-hundi facility would mark a significant step in modernising temple administration while maintaining the spiritual traditions associated with one of Hinduism's most sacred shrines. The initiative reflects a growing effort to blend faith with technology , enabling devotees around the world to contribute to the service and preservation of the iconic Jagannath Temple with greater ease and confidence.
