Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Jayaprakash Narayan and Nanaji Deshmukh on their birth anniversaries, remembering their contributions to India's political life, democratic values and grassroots development.

In separate messages on social media, Modi highlighted how the two leaders sought to bring meaningful change to society, emphasising good governance, public participation and the empowerment of marginalised communities.

Remembering Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as Loknayak JP, the prime minister said his influence transcended generations and that he inspired people to view public life as an instrument of national renewal. Modi also recalled Narayan's fearless opposition to the government during the Emergency (1975-77), a defining period in India's democratic history.

The socialist leader emerged as a prominent voice against the Emergency imposed by then prime minister Indira Gandhi. His call for Sampoorna Kranti, or Total Revolution, sought sweeping changes in political, social and economic life. His movement mobilised students, young people and opposition parties, making him one of the most influential figures in India's post-Independence political history.

Born on October 11, 1902, Narayan was a freedom fighter who later became a leading advocate of democratic accountability and political reform. He died on October 8, 1979, and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1999.

Modi said Narayan remained committed to good governance and reaching people on the margins of society, adding that his ideals continued to guide efforts towards building a Viksit Bharat.

The prime minister also paid homage to Nanaji Deshmukh, describing him as a nation-builder who combined political conviction with constructive social work. Modi highlighted Deshmukh's emphasis on rural development and community participation, saying lasting transformation begins at the grassroots.

Born on October 11, 1916, Deshmukh was among the founders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political organisation that preceded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, his legacy extended beyond party politics, particularly through his work in rural development, education and community-led initiatives.

Deshmukh devoted much of his later life to improving village economies and promoting self-reliance through social institutions. His work in Chitrakoot, spanning parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, became closely associated with integrated rural development and community participation.

He died on February 27, 2010, and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019.

The tributes brought together two distinct legacies: Narayan's fight for democratic accountability and Deshmukh's emphasis on development driven by local communities. Both leaders believed that lasting national progress required public participation and a commitment to improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
