The Mumbai International Film Festival is set to return with its most ambitious edition yet as the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF 2026) prepares to transform Mumbai into a global hub for documentary, short fiction, animation, and immersive storytelling from June 15 to 21, 2026 .

Organised by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting , MIFF has long been recognised as South Asia’s oldest and largest festival dedicated to non-feature cinema. However, the 2026 edition is being positioned as far more than a traditional film festival; it is evolving into a full-scale cinematic innovation and creator marketplace aimed at connecting filmmakers, producers, OTT platforms, distributors, investors, and global content creators.

The official festival poster reflects this transition with vibrant neon-inspired visuals featuring cinematic motifs, Mumbai landmarks, film reels, and artistic imagery symbolising creativity, global storytelling, and new-age cinema. The poster confirms that the festival will be held at the NFDC-FD Complex, Pedder Road, Mumbai . The event branding also strongly highlights MIFF’s emphasis on documentary, animation, and short fiction films .

One of the biggest highlights of MIFF 2026 is the expansion of the WAVES Doc Bazaar , which returns for its second edition from June 16 to 18 . The Bazaar is being developed as an international collaboration platform for documentary, short-film, and animation creators. It will include a Co-Production Market, Viewing Room, and Work-In-Progress Lab , giving filmmakers direct access to global buyers, OTT executives, festival programmers, producers, and distributors.

The Work-In-Progress Lab will provide selected filmmakers an opportunity to showcase rough cuts of their films before international advisors, editors, critics, and festival directors who will help refine projects before release. NFDC officials say the initiative is designed to help Indian and global filmmakers secure finishing funds, distribution partnerships, and festival exposure.

What makes the 19th edition especially significant is MIFF’s growing focus on future technologies and immersive storytelling . The festival is expected to feature discussions and showcases around AI-generated films, virtual production, interactive media, VR, AR, and XR experiences , indicating a major shift from conventional film exhibition to next-generation cinematic formats.

Delegate registrations for MIFF 2026 are already open through the official MIFF portal. Interested participants must create an account, fill in their details, and pay a registration fee of ₹500 , while students can register free after document verification. Film submissions for competition categories are currently being accepted through FilmFreeway, with the deadline set for April 12, 2026 .

The festival will also distribute prestigious awards worth nearly ₹55 lakh , including the coveted Golden Conch Award for Best International Documentary Film carrying a ₹10 lakh cash prize , along with Silver Conch awards and honours for animation, short fiction, cinematography, editing, sound design, debut filmmakers, and student films.

Although the organisers have not yet officially announced chief guests for the opening ceremony, MIFF traditionally attracts globally acclaimed filmmakers, actors, cinematographers, animation experts, jury members, and industry leaders. Masterclasses and sessions are also expected to feature prominent creators and cinema professionals from India and abroad.

Industry observers believe MIFF 2026 marks a strategic attempt by India to position itself as a major global destination for documentary cinema, independent storytelling, immersive media, and creator-driven content ecosystems . With international collaborations, market initiatives, mentorship programmes, and technology-focused discussions expanding rapidly, the 19th edition is being viewed as one of the most transformative chapters in MIFF’s history.
