From city streets to IIT dreams, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a heartening initiative to inspire the children of sanitation workers who tirelessly maintain the city’s cleanliness. With the aim of nurturing higher aspirations and self-confidence , GHMC on Friday (January 31, 2026) facilitated a visit to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad .

Children of sanitation workers employed across various GHMC circles, studying from Classes 6 to 10 , are participating in the educational tour. The programme goes beyond a routine institutional visit and seeks to break mental barriers , reinforcing the belief that great dreams can be pursued irrespective of social or economic background .

During the visit, the students are interacting with IIT Hyderabad faculty members and students . They are touring academic blocks, libraries and innovation centres , gaining first-hand exposure to an environment of learning, excellence and innovation . The programme also includes motivational sessions aimed at building self-belief, along with guidance on setting and pursuing future goals. GHMC has made comprehensive arrangements for the children’s safe transportation, meals and mentor support throughout the visit.

Highlighting the intent behind the initiative, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan said, “ Sanitation workers are the backbone of our city . Through this initiative, we want to convey that their children’s dreams are equally valuable and that reaching the highest peaks is possible for them as well . This is a small but meaningful step we are taking towards securing their bright future .”

By providing exposure to one of the country’s premier educational institutions for the children of those who keep the city’s streets clean, GHMC has underscored its commitment to social responsibility and equality . It is hoped that this initiative will bring transformative changes in the outlook and ambitions of sanitation workers’ children.
