From Chalkboards to Chatbots: IIT Madras Launches AI Course for Teachers

The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation , in collaboration with the Union Education Ministry’s Swayam Plus platform, has launched a free artificial intelligence (AI) training and certification programme for rural school teachers across the country, aiming to bring advanced digital skills into classrooms at the grassroots level. Titled “AI for Educators – K12 Teachers,” the 40-hour course is designed for teachers handling Classes I to XII and focuses on equipping them with practical AI tools that can be used in everyday classroom teaching, student engagement, and assessment.

The programme will be delivered online, ensuring accessibility even for teachers in remote areas, with training scheduled to begin on February 5 and registrations closing on January 31. Participants will learn to use generative AI tools, prompt engineering, AI-supported lesson planning, gamification strategies, and AR/VR visualization methods, while also understanding the ethical and responsible use of AI in schools. After completing the modules, teachers must undergo a virtual proctored assessment to earn certification, and the certification fee will be waived for the first 500 rural teachers who successfully complete the course.

The initiative aligns closely with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 , which emphasizes digital literacy, computational thinking, and the integration of technology into teaching to make learners future-ready. NEP advocates the effective use of digital tools to enhance both equity and quality in education, especially by supporting teachers in adapting to modern pedagogical methods. By empowering educators with AI knowledge and classroom-ready tools, the programme supports NEP’s goal of building future-ready classrooms and improving learning outcomes through technology-enabled instruction across urban and rural India.

The training is hosted on SWAYAM / Swayam Plus , the government’s national online learning platform designed to provide free access to high-quality courses for students, teachers, and lifelong learners. SWAYAM offers numerous technology and AI-related courses across disciplines, allowing participants to gain knowledge and, in many cases, obtain certification after assessments. In addition to teacher-focused initiatives, the Government of India has also introduced broader AI literacy programmes such as AI for All , aimed at building foundational AI understanding among citizens, students, and professionals, further expanding free certification pathways in emerging technologies. These programmes collectively create an ecosystem where educators and the general public can access structured, government-supported AI learning opportunities.

At the state level, several governments are also integrating AI and digital skills into teacher capacity-building efforts in line with national priorities. Such initiatives, often undertaken in collaboration with technical institutions, aim to strengthen teachers’ abilities in digital pedagogy, coding, and AI fundamentals, ensuring that regional education systems keep pace with technological change. Together with central programmes, these efforts help bridge the digital divide, ensure inclusive access to advanced learning tools, and prepare India’s teaching community to guide students in an increasingly AI-driven world.
