From Battlefield to Birdwatching: India Optel Brings Defence-Grade ‘Garud’ to Civilians

India Optel Limited (IOL) has entered the civilian optics market with Garud, an indigenous high-resolution binocular developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, an IOL unit. The launch reflects the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push to expand domestic design, precision manufacturing and defence technology capabilities.

Garud combines proven defence-grade optical expertise with modern technology. The binocular offers 8x magnification and a 7.6-degree field of view, allowing users to observe distant objects while retaining a viewing perspective. It weighs about 610 grams, making it portable, and features ±5 diopter adjustment to accommodate individual eyesight. Soft-touch eyecups and an ergonomic grip are designed to improve comfort during extended viewing, while its weather-resistant construction supports reliable use in varied outdoor conditions.

The platform has a strong security pedigree. According to the Defence Ministry, the binocular platform has served as a trusted companion for India’s Defence Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in demanding operational conditions. Garud brings that experience into a civilian format, extending established optical capabilities to users outside government and security services.

Its potential civilian market is broad. Garud is suited to birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature exploration, travel, sports, forestry and marine activities, besides security-related applications. This creates an opportunity for IOL to commercialise capabilities developed for national security while reaching outdoor enthusiasts and professional users.

The launch also carries wider significance for India’s optical manufacturing ecosystem. IOL, a Mini Ratna Category-I defence PSU, has a precision optical manufacturing legacy dating to 1943. Bringing a defence-derived product to civilian customers demonstrates how military manufacturing expertise can support commercial applications and potentially deepen domestic capabilities in optics and optoelectronics.

Garud therefore represents more than a new binocular. It showcases a defence-to-civilian technology pathway, where indigenous expertise developed for demanding operational environments can reach everyday users. By combining domestic manufacturing, established defence experience and a commercial market, IOL’s move reinforces the broader goal of building a more self-reliant Indian optical manufacturing sector.
