The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched on August 28, 2014, has grown from a campaign to open bank accounts into one of India’s most important financial-inclusion platforms. Its original goal was to provide banking access to every unbanked household, bringing low-income and underserved citizens into the formal financial system.

A key benefit is a basic savings account without a minimum-balance requirement, making formal banking accessible to people with irregular or limited incomes. Account holders receive a RuPay debit card, along with accident insurance of up to ₹2 lakh for accounts opened after August 2018. Eligible customers can also access an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000, offering a small credit cushion after satisfactory account operation.

PMJDY has expanded beyond banking access by linking account holders with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and social-security programmes. Through the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile framework, government benefits can reach beneficiaries directly, helping make welfare delivery more transparent. The accounts also provide access to schemes including PMJJBY, PMSBY, Atal Pension Yojana and MUDRA, connecting people with insurance, pensions and credit.

The scheme’s scale has been remarkable. The campaign earned a Guinness World Record in January 2015, when 18,096,130 bank accounts were opened in a single week. By August 19, 2026, PMJDY had reached 59.09 crore accounts, including 32.92 crore female beneficiaries. Deposits had climbed to ₹3,16,514 crore, while 41.29 crore RuPay cards had been issued.

The programme has also contributed to wider financial participation. The PIB’s 2026 backgrounder notes that India’s Financial Inclusion Index rose from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026, reflecting deeper access to savings, credit, insurance and digital payments.

Women have been major beneficiaries. With 32.92 crore female accounts, PMJDY has strengthened women’s direct participation in formal finance, supporting greater financial independence, savings and access to welfare benefits.

Overall, PMJDY has moved from “banking the unbanked” toward securing, empowering and financially integrating millions of Indians. Its lasting impact is growing financial confidence.
