American tennis star Ben Shelton has strengthened his coaching team by bringing former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero, who previously guided Carlos Alcaraz to six Grand Slam titles, on board for the 2027 season.

The 24-year-old Shelton announced the appointment on social media on Sunday, describing Ferrero as a “huge addition” to his team. Speaking to Eurosport, Shelton praised the Spaniard as one of the world's best coaches, saying his experience and wisdom could make a significant difference to his career.

Ferrero, who won the 2003 French Open, began coaching Alcaraz in 2019 when the Spaniard was just 15. During their seven-year partnership, Alcaraz won six major titles, including the 2022 and 2025 US Open, the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon championships, and the 2024 and 2025 French Open. He also became the youngest world No. 1 in the Open Era. Their partnership ended on December 17, 2025.

Alcaraz welcomed Ferrero's new assignment, saying the experienced coach would be a great addition to Shelton's team and could help him raise his game further.

Interestingly, Shelton defeated Alcaraz in a dramatic five-set quarter-final at the 2026 US Open before reaching his maiden Grand Slam final, where he lost to Alexander Zverev.

Shelton enjoyed a successful 2026 campaign, winning four titles at Dallas, Munich, Stuttgart and Montreal. He finished the season with a 41-18 win-loss record and qualified for the ATP Finals.

Ferrero will work alongside Shelton's father, Bryan Shelton, who has coached him throughout his professional career.

Praising his new player, Ferrero said Shelton possessed extraordinary talent, power and character. The Spaniard expressed excitement about joining Bryan and the team, as he prepares to help the American challenge for major honours in 2027.
