Frequent Police Complaints? SPs Will Be Held Accountable, Says Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday expressed strong dissatisfaction over recurring complaints related to policing, particularly delays in arrests and alleged attempts to influence criminal investigations. Stressing that public confidence in law enforcement must remain uncompromised, he directed senior officials to fix accountability of Superintendents of Police (SPs) in districts reporting a higher number of police-related grievances.
The Chief Minister issued the directions while interacting with citizens during his Janata Darshan programme, where he met people from different districts, heard their concerns individually and accepted written representations. Each complaint was forwarded to the concerned department with instructions for time-bound resolution.
Reviewing police-related grievances, Adityanath made it clear that any laxity in acting against criminals or delaying arrests would not be tolerated. He instructed officials to ensure prompt action in every legitimate complaint and warned against negligence that could undermine public trust in the justice system.
Emphasising a victim-centric approach, the Chief Minister said every complainant deserves to be treated with sensitivity and fairness. He directed officials to ensure that no individual faces injustice because of administrative delays or procedural lapses, adding that grievances should be resolved swiftly and transparently.
Adityanath also asked officials to pay special attention to revenue and policing matters, which frequently feature in public complaints. On family disputes, he advised authorities to first encourage resolution through mutual dialogue and counselling wherever possible. If reconciliation proves unsuccessful, legal proceedings should follow in accordance with the law.
Reiterating his government's commitment to responsive governance, the Chief Minister said public grievance redressal must remain efficient, transparent and accountable. He instructed departments to monitor complaints closely and ensure satisfactory outcomes within the prescribed timelines.
The directions underscore the state government's continued focus on improving administrative efficiency and strengthening public confidence in policing by ensuring that officials remain answerable for delays, negligence and failures in addressing genuine complaints from citizens.
