French prosecutors summon Elon Musk over alleged child abuse images on X
Paris prosecutors have expanded their investigation into Elon Musk and social media platform X, summoning him for a voluntary interview over allegations involving illegal content distribution, AI-generated deepfakes, and platform governance failures.
The case, led by the Paris cybercrime prosecutor’s office , focuses on suspected circulation of child sexual abuse material , sexually explicit deepfakes, and content linked to Holocaust denial , all of which are criminal offences under French law. Authorities are also examining possible complicity in illegal content distribution and whether automated systems contributed to amplifying harmful material.
Former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino and other company staff have also been called as witnesses. Prosecutors said the interviews are voluntary and intended to allow executives to present their position, while confirming the investigation will continue regardless of attendance.
A key focus is X’s AI chatbot Grok system , which allegedly generated sexually explicit deepfake content and misleading outputs, raising concerns over AI safety controls and moderation failures. Investigators are also reviewing whether algorithmic systems on X contributed to the rapid spread of illegal or harmful material.
X remains one of the largest real-time social media platforms globally, with an estimated 400–500 million posts per day , or roughly 5,000–6,000 posts per second . For example, during major global events such as elections or breaking news moments, users can collectively generate millions of posts within just a few hours, overwhelming moderation systems and increasing reliance on automated filtering tools.
In one typical high-traffic scenario, a trending global event can generate over 10–20 million posts in a single day , with hashtags rising to worldwide trends within minutes. Regulators say this scale makes it difficult to detect illegal or harmful content quickly, especially when AI-generated material is involved.
French authorities have broadened the inquiry to examine potential manipulation of automated data systems and whether viral AI controversies may have influenced investor sentiment ahead of planned corporate restructuring linked to Musk’s ventures.
Musk has responded indirectly through posts on X around mid-April 2026, reacting to media coverage of the investigation. He reposted and commented on reports, rejecting the framing of the probe and describing regulatory pressure on X as excessive. He has not issued a formal detailed legal statement addressing the summons.
French officials have also contacted US regulators, including the Department of Justice and SEC, but American authorities have reportedly declined cooperation, citing jurisdictional concerns. The investigation remains ongoing.
