The scorching Paris heat continued to test players at the French Open on Wednesday, but Novak Djokovic once again proved why he remains one of tennis’ toughest competitors. Battling temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius and an inspired young opponent, the Serbian star fought his way into the third round with a hard-earned four-set victory at Roland Garros.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated French wildcard Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3 in a gruelling contest that lasted nearly four hours on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Throughout the match, Djokovic relied on ice packs around his neck and head during changeovers to cope with the exhausting conditions.

Despite being ranked only 74th in the world, the 24-year-old Royer produced a fearless performance and pushed Djokovic harder than many expected. The Serbian appeared close to victory in the third-set tiebreak but missed crucial chances, allowing the home favourite to extend the battle.

Djokovic, however, showed his trademark resilience in the fourth set. One of the standout moments came when he produced a sensational forehand around the net post from well outside the court, drawing loud cheers from the Paris crowd. After finally sealing the win, Djokovic nearly lost his balance from exhaustion before celebrating with his trademark violin gesture.

“It was a very difficult match in difficult conditions,” Djokovic said after the contest, crediting experience for helping him survive the challenge.

The victory extended Djokovic’s remarkable record against French opponents at Roland Garros to 14 wins without a defeat and marked his 21st consecutive appearance in the third round of the tournament.

While Djokovic advanced, the women’s draw witnessed a major upset as Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina crashed out against Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva in a dramatic three-set encounter.

It turned into a memorable day for Ukraine, with Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk also progressing comfortably. Defending champion Iga Swiatek continued her dominant run in Paris as she moved another step closer to a fifth French Open title.
