Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday ordered the immediate closure of all transport department check posts across the state. The decision is aimed at improving vehicular movement, reducing traffic congestion, and eliminating opportunities for corruption in the transport sector.

Following the CM’s directive, the state transport department instructed staff to immediately halt all check-post activities and redeploy personnel for other official duties. District transport authorities were directed to remove boards and barricades at former check-post sites to ensure smooth traffic flow. “All records, equipment, and furniture from the check posts will be transferred to the respective District Transport Offices (DTOs). Officials are also required to verify and preserve all financial and administrative documents,” the department said in a statement. Officials have been asked to submit a detailed report on the closures by 5 pm.

The decision to dismantle check posts comes in the wake of corruption allegations, traffic bottlenecks, and the growing use of digital verification systems. Physical check posts, once essential for monitoring vehicle movement and enforcing regulations, are increasingly being replaced by technology-driven solutions, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. The move is also in line with central government recommendations under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which encourage the removal of state-level entry barriers to facilitate smoother interstate trade.

Telangana had multiple types of check posts, including border check posts, internal check posts within districts, integrated multi-functional posts, temporary check posts for special events, and weighbridges for monitoring vehicle weight. Their closure is expected to enhance trade efficiency, reduce harassment of transporters, and improve overall administrative efficiency, while digital systems gradually take over enforcement responsibilities.

While the move is likely to streamline vehicle movement and cut down corruption, the state will need to ensure effective monitoring of overloaded vehicles and compliance with transport laws during the transition period. Long-term, the closure of check posts is expected to modernize Telangana’s transport ecosystem, making it more transparent, efficient, and business-friendly.
