Mumbai is hosting the fourth season of the All India Classical Chess Masters from May 23 to May 28, bringing together a competitive field of rated players and emerging chess talent from across India.
Organised by the Mumbai Chess Centre , the tournament follows an eight round Swiss format , ensuring players face a variety of opponents across the event. The games are being played under classical time control of 90 minutes with a 30 second increment from move one , testing calculation, patience, and endurance over long battles.
The field is led by top seed Shreyansh Somaiya (Elo 1973) , who enters as one of the key contenders with a steady and consistent playing style in FIDE rated tournaments.
Among the key challengers is Aditya Shardul Kadam (1917) , known for his aggressive and tactical approach, often creating early complications to pressure opponents. Reyaansh Venkat (1906) brings a more balanced and positional style, backed by solid opening preparation and dependable endgame technique.
Gaurang Bhandari (1889) is regarded as a patient and strategic player, often preferring long technical battles, while Yash Kapadi (1854) is an emerging talent known for creative ideas and a fighting spirit against higher rated opponents.
The tournament also features several FIDE rated players in the 1700 to 1800 range , including experienced circuit competitor AGM Rajveer Pinkesh Nahar , adding depth and competitiveness to the field.
While the event does not feature top level Grandmasters, it remains an important platform for young players and rising talents to gain rating points, experience, and exposure in classical chess.
According to organisers, the championship reflects the growing popularity of competitive chess in India, with strong participation from multiple states. The mix of experienced rated players and ambitious newcomers is expected to make the event closely fought and engaging throughout the week.
With long format pressure, deep preparation, and contrasting playing styles, the All India Chess Masters is now underway in Mumbai and promises an intense week of classical chess action.
