Four Workers Killed in Coal Slurry Collapse at Dhanbad Washery in Jharkhand
A routine workday at a coal washery in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district turned tragic on Saturday evening, claiming the lives of four workers who were buried under a sudden collapse of coal slurry. The incident occurred at the Moonidih coal washery , operated under Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) .
According to local police, the workers were engaged in loading coal slurry into trucks when a massive chunk of the semi-liquid waste gave way without warning. Within moments, several labourers were trapped beneath the heavy sludge, leaving co-workers in shock and scrambling for help.
Rescue teams were rushed to the site, and a painstaking operation followed. After hours of effort, all four bodies were recovered from the debris. “Bodies of all four workers were dug out during the rescue operation,” said Waqar Hussain , in-charge of the Putki police station.
Coal slurry, a byproduct of the coal washing process, is often unstable and can turn hazardous if not handled with strict safety measures. While the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be officially confirmed, the incident has once again raised serious questions about workplace safety standards in coal mining zones.
Authorities are expected to initiate an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident. Meanwhile, the loss of four lives has left families devastated, highlighting the harsh and often dangerous realities faced by workers in the mining sector.
In a relief measure, officials have announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh each to the families of the deceased workers along with a job for one family member of each victim.
