Four Match Points Saved, Still No Title: Satwik and Chirag Suffer Final Heartbreak at Thailand Open
Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty came heartbreakingly close to pulling off a stunning comeback before finishing runners up at the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament in Bangkok on Sunday, after saving four championship points in a tense final.
The World No. 4 duo eventually lost 12 to 21, 23 to 25 in a 53 minute thriller against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin , who held their nerve in the decisive moments to secure their first win over the Indian pair.
The opening game saw the Indians struggle to settle, with service errors and unforced mistakes allowing the Indonesians to take early control. Despite brief resistance, Satwik and Chirag could not recover the momentum and dropped the first game 12 to 21.
The second game was a completely different contest, marked by intensity, sharp net exchanges, and fluctuating leads. The Indian pair improved their coordination and briefly moved ahead with aggressive returns and better serve variation, keeping the match finely balanced.
As tension built, both pairs exchanged points in rapid bursts, with neither side able to pull away. The Indonesians repeatedly reached championship point , but Satwik and Chirag responded with extraordinary composure to save all four and keep the match alive.
At 23 all, however, the breakthrough finally came for the Indonesians. A powerful attacking return from Marthin forced an error from the Indian side, sealing the title after a dramatic finish.
Despite the defeat, Satwik and Chirag once again underlined their consistency on the international stage. Former champions at this event in 2019 and 2024, they have remained one of India’s most dependable doubles pairs, regularly reaching major finals.
For Carnando and Marthin , the victory marked a significant triumph in their reunion tournament after injury setbacks, making the win even more special.
The result may have ended in disappointment for India, but the fight shown by Satwik and Chirag, especially under extreme pressure, reinforced their reputation as one of the world’s top doubles teams.
