Prateek Yadav , the younger son of Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and stepbrother of SP president Akhilesh Yadav , died on Wednesday morning in Lucknow at the age of 38 , triggering grief across the political spectrum and within the Yadav family.

According to reports, Prateek Yadav suddenly fell ill in the early hours of the day and was rushed to a civil hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. He had reportedly been under treatment for health issues for some time and was recently admitted to a private hospital before being discharged after improvement. His sudden collapse has led to a postmortem examination at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) to determine the exact cause of death. While initial inputs suggest he had been unwell for days, the precise medical reason remains unclear, and authorities are awaiting the postmortem report.

Akhilesh Yadav reacted with deep sorrow, calling the loss “extremely saddening” in a post on social media platform X. He also visited the civil hospital and later went to KGMU , where the postmortem was scheduled, but he did not speak to the media. In his message, he offered condolences and prayed for peace to the departed soul. Sources also said he had visited Prateek during a recent hospitalisation about 10 days ago, when he was admitted to Medanta Hospital due to health complications.

Prateek Yadav, though associated with one of Uttar Pradesh’s most prominent political families, is not the biological son of Mulayam Singh Yadav . He is the son of Sadhana Gupta from her earlier marriage to Chandraprakash Gupta , and later came to be part of the Yadav family after Sadhana Gupta’s marriage to Mulayam Singh Yadav. This family background and his position as a step-son within the larger Yadav household has often been a subject of public discussion, and is also seen as one of the reasons he stayed away from active politics.

Instead of entering the political arena, Prateek Yadav carved out his own identity in the fields of business and fitness. He is known as a fitness enthusiast with ventures linked to gyms and real estate. He has also been associated with animal welfare initiatives and is often described as someone who prefers a low-profile, private life away from political attention. Reportedly educated abroad, he returned to India to focus on entrepreneurial pursuits rather than following the family’s political legacy.

He was married to BJP leader Aparna Bisht Yadav , and the couple has two daughters. Despite political differences within the family, Prateek remained a figure often in the public eye due to his lineage and personal life.

His sudden death has left the Yadav family and political circles in shock, with condolences pouring in as the family awaits further medical clarity.
