Former MLA Estamur Mominin has surrendered before police at Nongpoh in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district after remaining absconding for several weeks in connection with a violence case linked to tensions during the GHADC elections , officials said.

Police sources confirmed that a team from West Garo Hills is expected to take custody of the former legislator for further interrogation as multiple FIRs have already been registered against him. The case relates to violent clashes that erupted in Garo Hills following election-related developments in March.

The unrest traces back to March 9, when Mominin visited the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura to file his nomination for the GHADC polls. His presence allegedly triggered protests outside the office, which escalated into clashes between groups opposing the participation of non-tribal candidates in the council elections. Reports also indicate that he was allegedly assaulted during the incident, further intensifying tensions in the region.

Police have also accused him of delivering an inflammatory speech at Chibinang , which is believed to have aggravated the situation and contributed to the spread of violence across West Garo Hills. The violence later led to fatalities, arson, curfews, internet suspension, and even deployment of Army columns to restore order.

Amid escalating law-and-order concerns, the state government eventually postponed the GHADC elections , citing instability in the region.

Separately, political tension surrounding the case has also escalated, with Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma filing an FIR against Mominin over allegations of inciting disharmony ahead of the polls.

Officials said investigation is ongoing and the exact charges and legal provisions are being finalised, while questioning of the former MLA is expected to continue in custody.
