Former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur hospitalised from Deoria jail after chest pain

Former Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Thakur, lodged in Deoria district jail on fraud charges, was hospitalized late Tuesday night after complaining of severe chest pain and heart-related discomfort, officials said on Wednesday.

According to jail authorities, Thakur’s condition worsened around 11.30 pm while he was inside the jail premises. He was first examined by the jail doctor and then rushed to Maharshi Deoraha Baba Medical College in Deoria for emergency care. As specialist cardiac facilities were not available there, doctors referred him to BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, where he was admitted for further treatment and placed under close medical observation. Officials said preliminary cardiac tests were conducted and his condition is currently stable.

Jail officials said Thakur has been in judicial custody since December 10, 2025 . He was arrested in connection with a case dating back to 1999 , in which he is accused of misusing his position as Deoria Superintendent of Police to fraudulently secure an industrial plot in the name of his wife using forged documents. An FIR was registered under multiple charges, including cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy , following an investigation into the alleged irregular allotment.

Thakur has denied the allegations and claimed that his arrest was politically motivated, linking it to his criticism of the state government over the cough syrup controversy. He has also raised objections over procedural issues surrounding his arrest. A local court rejected his bail plea on Tuesday, and his remand application is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday.
