The death of Nadendla Bhaskara Rao , former Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, has brought renewed focus on one of the most controversial political chapters in the state’s history. The veteran leader, who played a pivotal role in shaping regional politics during the 1980s, passed away in Hyderabad at the age of 90 after battling age-related ailments , triggering widespread mourning across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Political leaders across party lines expressed grief over his demise. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy were among those who paid tribute, recalling his administrative experience and long public life. His passing is being seen not just as the loss of a senior political leader, but as the closing of a significant and often debated political era.

Born in 1935 in Guntur district , Bhaskara Rao began his career as a High Court lawyer , earning recognition for his legal acumen. He entered politics through the Congress party , where he rose steadily and later served as a minister under Marri Chenna Reddy , gaining key governance experience. His political journey took a decisive turn when he joined N.T. Rama Rao , becoming one of the key architects of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) during its formative phase.

His career reached a dramatic peak in 1984 , when he assumed office as Chief Minister during NTR’s absence for medical treatment abroad. With the backing of the Governor, his move led to a dramatic political crisis that shook the state. However, his tenure lasted only 31 days , making him one of the shortest-serving Chief Ministers. The episode sparked a massive political backlash, culminating in NTR’s return to power through a mass political resurgence , a moment that remains deeply etched in public memory.

Bhaskara Rao’s legacy continued to be shaped by allegations of political betrayal , a tag that followed him throughout his life. While critics accused him of undermining democratic values, he consistently maintained that his actions were within the constitutional framework and driven by the circumstances of the time. Despite his defense, public perception largely remained in favour of NTR, impacting his long-term political standing.

After stepping down, he attempted to rebuild his political career by launching the Prajaswamy Telugu Desam Party , but it failed to gain traction. He later returned to the Congress and made a comeback by winning as a Member of Parliament from Khammam in 1998 . In his later years, he stayed away from active politics but continued to comment on contemporary developments as a seasoned observer.

In recent months, Bhaskara Rao had been undergoing treatment for declining health in Hyderabad. His death has been described by political observers as the end of a controversial yet significant political chapter , reflecting a life marked by both influence and intense debate. He is survived by his son Nadendla Manohar , and leaders including Pawan Kalyan conveyed their condolences, expressing support to the bereaved family.
